JEFF “OX”KARGOLA GOES DOWN IN MEX
On November 14th, 2009 the newest member of the AFMXA, Jeff “OX” Kargola was in a serious accident while pre-running the Baja 1000 in San Felipe Mexico. OX crashed, smashed his belly (probably with the bars digging in) and drove his head into the ground. He says he saw a bush shadow that may have been hiding a rock. His front tire missed it and his back tire hit it sending him into his crash at probably 50mph. He isn’t too sure but he knows he was riding down the highway after the crash through military check points without stopping. OX saved himself. Riding alone he got up and rode to the highway and towards San Felipe, a 45 mile ride. Eventually he got dizzy and was going to crash on the pavement and stopped in the middle of the highway. Some locals stopped and put him in their car and one rode his bike to SF.
At 11:22am the AFMXA received word that Jeff was in a clinic with a laundry list of injuries and we went to work! Medjet assist was called immediately as Dr. Gus Gialama’s stayed in constant contact with the Dr’s at the clinic in Mexico. By 2:45pm Medjet was in the air and Jeff was on his way home to be admitted to Scripps Mercy for proper treatment. He landed in San Diego at 5:03pm and was in surgery by 7:53pm to stop internal bleeding.
Because OX is a member of the AFMXA he knew he could contact us and we were able to assist him in a life threatening situation. We will continue to support him and look forward to his full recovery!
Although his medjet flight was covered by his membership, his hospital stay and surgeries are not. We are currently taking any donations to help support our friend and team member. so donate now at AFMXA.COM

Jeff Kargola had a serious accident in San Felipe Mexico while pre-running for the Baja 1000 this weekend. Jeff decided to go out by himself, went down 45 miles from anything, luckily was able to get back on his bike and make it to a highway where he was picked up by a truck driving by. He was able to contact Ryan Hagy and the emergency plan was put into motion. Through the help of the AFMXA, Jeff was medivaced via the AFMXA medjet assist program to Scripps Mercy in SD where he is currently being treated. He suffered broken ribs, internal bleeding and a severe concussion, and performed an exploratory surgery to assess his internal injuries.
They’ve concluded that Jeff had an incision on his intestine, some hematomas and bruising on his stomach. The doctor said he was very lucky with the location on his intestine, as it was close to something major. He’s in recovery and will be at Scripps for the next four days, and then at home for recovery for a month or so.
We will update you as we learn more.
Get well soon, Ox!

After some knee problems, Miles Rogoish is finally back on his bike. He sent this update over:
“After popping my knee pretty bad and being down and out for four weeks, I’m back to riding. Went out last night to shoot photos with Jake Geisel. Being laid down for a while helped me film a bunch of edits for BNQT I’m psyched on, so it wasn’t to bad. I still have to wait to go full force until i get my new sports brace, since I lost the one I had after my original ACL surgery, so hopefully that won’t take too long to get mailed in. The last stage of BMX Series by Eastpak – BMX Freestyle National Championship, happened in the 24 and 25 days of October in Santarém – Festival Bike. 70 Signed riders gave their best to raise the last points in game. Beside of the best national riders, some international riders showed up, increasing level and the show!
Saturday was eliminator day, beginners and amateurs. There were no time for pro eliminatory, but we had a little peak of what we would expect in the next day!
Sunday started with the beginners finals!. 3rd Place Luis Umbelino from Torrer Vedras, in 2nd Hugo Jordão from Alqueidão. The 1st Place went one more time to João Vale from Leiria. In Amateur, in 3rd place Pedro Dias from Torres Vedras, 2nd Alexandre Rodrigues from Portimão and 1st place to Diogo Santos from Casais da Serra.
In pro category the podium was dominated by the international riders. From Madrid, Sergio Layos took the 3rd place, in 2nd went to another Spanish, Daniel Penafiel from Burgos winner of the last two finals of BMX Series. The 1st place went to England, Anthony Watkinson from Liverpool.
About the Portuguese riders the best Pro. rated was Pedro Seca From Portimão, fallowed by Daniel Serra from Amadora and Jean Silva from Leiria.
We saw a little of every trick, a double tailwhip, a tailwhip-to-nosepick from Anthony Watkinson, backflip-superman from Daniel Penafiel, whip transfer downside from Sergio Layos and a 360 barspin in the Spine from Pedro Seca.
And the 3rd stage elapsed like this. The 1st stage was in Caldas da Rainha and the 2nd in São João da Madeira. The local and date of the trophy delivery to the national best rated riders will soon be announced.
