Nyquist won the Dew Cup in dirt. You already knew that. Photos are courtesy of Haro Bikes.
Dew cup, huh?
Yeah, pretty crazy!
How stoked are you?
I’m a very, very happy man. Winning the dirt overall once was insane, but to do it twice is more than I could have asked for.
Did you do anything big to celebrate?
Ummmm, not really. Hahahaha! The family and I went to Greenville afterward to hang out with all of our old friends. We had a great dinner. Pretty tame celebration, I guess.

What were the high and low points of the season for you?
High was probably winning dirt in Salt Lake City. It always feels good to be able to pull off a win when you’re in a do or die situation. My low was probably the way I rode on dirt in Orlando. I was really hoping to ride well there and really clinch the title. Instead I barely made it happen and was stressing the whole contest.
So does the Dew Cup go on display in your house or in a box in the garage?
Not sure. Right now it’s probably gonna get put on a shelf somewhere. I’m not super into displaying trophies around the house, but my wife really wants me to. She says it’s cool to have stuff like that on display for people to look at. So, I guess it’s still undecided… haha!

I think we all saw your dirt victory coming, but you came out of nowhere and shut down the park contest in Florida. What happened there?
Yeah, park was amazing! I couldn’t have been happier with the way it all ended up. Perfect way to end the weekend and year.
What sort of an effect do you feel that your shoes had on your success?
Without sounding too cheesy, having comfortable shoes that are grippy and look good is great. Fashion and function. I’ve had some shoes in the past that didn’t have a good sole on them and it actually made me slip a pedal at the X-Games. I’m really happy with my shoes… South Bronx!

Now that the Dew Tour season is over, what’s next for you?
Chillin’! Chillin’ hard. I just want to relax and be at home doing home things. Still gotta ride, but I’m giving myself a little break.
Any thanks?
Well, thanks to Osiris first off for believing in me as a rider and as a person. Thanks to Haro, Rockstar, Ogio, Bell Helmets, SST, and the Jiffy Mark of Los Gatos. Also, a big thanks to my family.
Final question… can I borrow $75,000?
I wish it was $75,000… turns out they dropped it to $60,000! Hahahaha! Hard economic times for sure.

Amongst the many things that Tony Mag does in a day, is go to speak to kids at schools and different venues, usually about doing the right thing, telling his story and encouraging kids to stay in school, off drugs and out of gangs. There are many guys that have a life experience of doing the wrong thing, making the wrong choices and ending up in prison or on drugs that end up reforming their life and now speak out against that lifestyle based on their personal experience. While some of these guys do an amazing job of speaking out against a lifestyle that they know all too well, there aren’t too many skate celebs that didn’t go to jail or ended up on drugs that go and speak on this issue.

Tony Mag has a unique perspective on this, coming from Sweden and knowing no one upon arriving in the country back in early 80’s. He certainly had many opportunities to do the wrong thing but remained focused on skating and keeping things good. So the other day, T-Mag got together with skate legend Dennis Martinez, who runs a very active post prison program and after school program to speak to a group of kids at City Heights police station, which is in San Diego. Dennis, along with fellow program mates Keith and Martin told some tough stories on what not to do in life, while T-Mag told a fun story of coming to America and being dropped off in downtown LA in the middle of the night on the first day of his arrival in America and how he from there, made his way to San Diego and skateboarding fame and fortune and went on to become a founder of several famous companies, including H-Street skateboards and Osiris Shoes.

There were many scarred looking faces in the crowd when the other guys spoke, some laughs when T-Mag did his thing and some of the kids shared some of their own personal experiences. Dennis showed clips from his upcoming documentary titled D.O.P.E., which cleverly stands for “Death or Prison Eventually”. The film is about exactly that; drugs will absolutely lead you to your death or you will end up in prison eventually. Listening to Martin’s and Keith’s prison stories, it sounded to me like death is the better option. Very scary stuff.
The kids seemed like they were a smart bunch that got the message loud and clear and all voiced their gratitude to all the speakers. Stickers were handed out and a few autographs were signed. The police force of City Heights all expressed their gratitude to the speakers and the kids for being present, knowing that any kid that can learn these lesson ahead of time, before dying or ending up in prison not only makes for a better life for those individuals and their families but also makes for a more peaceful community and aids the police in their work to create good and decent living conditions for the all people, which is actually the main focus of their work, as opposed to chasing skateboarders around.
