May 2, 1991 // Mossel Bay, South Africa
Synopsis:
An exceptionally talented regularfoot, Shaun Joubert has emerged as the South African most likely to carry the torch previously held by Jordy Smith. His third-place finish in Bali at the Oakley Global Challenge opened the world’s eyes to his talent.
Variables:
The son of a scientist father and a doctor mother, it’s safe to assume that Shaun has the smarts to succeed on the world stage. His talent is not in question either, but it remains to be seen if he can make the leap from the Dark Continent, something that only a select few have been able to do.
Forecast:
Committed to school, Joubert will not be as present in the surf world as he would like to be. But school, he claims, keeps him motivated and another year honing his skills at J-Bay will certainly stand him in good stead.
