Dusty Payne is quickly establishing himself as one of the premier young surfers in Hawaii, if not the world. Hailing from Lahaina, Maui, Payne possesses the most focus and drive in an extremely deep talent pool of Valley Isle surfers. He’s been fortunate enough to polish his act in the perfection of Honolua Bay, while at the same time cutting his teeth in the world of big waves at places like Jaws and other outer reefs along Maui’s exposed northern shore. “Dusty Shitstain, that kid surfs so fast,” said Bruce Irons while hovering over the light table, picking photos for SURFER’s recent Guest Editor issue. “He’s dynamic, explosive.” Inspired by Irons, driven by a steel will, and motivated to be Hawaii’s next big thing, whether this nimble regularfooter is sporting a jersey, falling from the sky at Pipe, or behind a tow-rope at Jaws, he’s got all the requisite attributes necessary for somebody determined to elevate the sport to the next level.
