How long have you been shaping? I`ve been a shaper for over 13 years. How and why did you get started? After I graduated from SDSU I had an opportunity to write a business plan for a local shaper who was starting a clothing line. I did this in trade for a surfboard. Before I knew it, I was rough shaping surfboards and production manager of a clothing line. At the time, I was getting paid $10 per rough shape.
How many boards have you shaped? I would have to say at least 2,500
What are your favorite shapes? The Lis-Style Fish has become a favorite and I like pintails, especially my 6` 4" rounded pin.
What boards in the lineup stokes you the most? Any board that`s been shaped by me.
Are there any new design features your experimenting with or that you already have in the works? Twin-fin designs with faster bottom contours. Single-wing swallow-tails with concaves and vee. Influenced by the 1978-81 MR twin fin 2. I recently made a carbon fiber pop-out 6`4" with channels. Still in R&D.
What kind of fin systems do you favor and why? Future Fins, for a removable system, they are clean and strong. Glass on fins for single fin guns and the riders` preference.
What advances in materials do you see in the near future? The distant future? I recently read about an upcoming soy-based resin that`s positive and in the future. I`m sure we will be looking at the space industry for the latest in composites.
Do you pre-shape your blanks with a machine? No, never. It`s all about the custom shape. However, I have shaped a couple hundred of these computer shapes for another well-known label.
Who are some of your team riders and how much R&D do you do with them? Mike Myers, Al Bandy, Monte McCullough, Erik McMahon and Kurtis Woodin. All team riders have input and spend time with me in the shaping room and in the water.
What have been some of your recent surf adventures? Chiba, Japan a while back, Morrow Rock by the nuclear power plant. The water goes from 80 degrees in the canal to 56 degrees in the line up. You just reminded me that I need a vacation. Africa in April; we`ll see how that goes.
What is the best way for someone to get a Seagraves board? It`s easy, call me directly at (858) 456-1932 or go to my Web site seagraves surfboards and send me an email.
Any comments for the SD surf community? Live creatively, die fulfilled.
